The present invention relates to tobacco, which has a reduced content of nicotine and nitrosamines and which is used for the manufacture of consumer tobacco products and to methods for producing such tobacco. Specifically, embodiments of the present invention include methods for reducing the amount of nicotine and nitrosamines in tobacco cultures by treating such tobacco cultures with auxin, an auxin analog, or a jasmonate antagonist during the cultivation of these crops. The present invention also relates to tobacco obtained by said methods and tobacco products made from it for the consumer.
