titleOfInvention COPOLYMER CONTAINING A MULTIFOLENT CATION
abstract Described is a copolymer containing a multivalent cation, wherein the copolymer is water soluble and is in particulate form, and the copolymer is derived from one or more ethylenically unsaturated acids, said copolymer having the following characteristics: (a) an intrinsic viscosity of at least 3 dl/g at measurement in 1 M NaCl solution at 25°C; (b) the copolymer is obtained from a monomer mixture containing an ethylenically unsaturated acid and at least one comonomer, wherein the amount of ethylenically unsaturated acid present in the monomer mixture is from 5 to 65 wt.%; and (c) the content of the residual comonomer, which is acrylamide, is less than 1000 ppm, and the copolymer in the form of the original solution has a gel content when measured less than 50%, and the gel content is determined by filtering the original solution obtained from 1.0 g polymer and 199 ml of deionized water by stirring the mixture for 4 hours at a temperature of 25°C, through a sieve with a mesh size of 190 μm, washing the residue retained by the filter, extracting, drying at 110°C and weighing, followed by calculating the percentage of insoluble polymer (mass solids retained by the filter [g]/weight of dry polymer before filtration [g]), wherein said at least one comonomer is selected from acrylamide and said ethylenically unsaturated acid is selected from acrylic acid.
