abstract |
A method for producing glycolic acid or a derivative thereof comprises reacting formaldehyde with carbon monoxide and water in a carbonylation reactor in the presence of a sulfur catalyst, said reactor operating under suitable conditions in which glycolic acid is formed; separating a first product stream comprising glycolic acid, impurities and sulfur compounds in a carbonylation reactor; passing the first product stream to an esterification reactor where it is esterified to form alkyl glycolate and where the esterification is catalyzed by sulfur compounds recovered in the first product stream; recovering a second product stream comprising alkyl glycolate, sulfur compounds and impurities from the esterification reactor; separating sulfur compounds from the second product stream and recycling to the carbonylation reactor in step (a) to form a sulfur-depleted second product stream; separating the alkyl glycolate from the sulfur-depleted second product stream in the distillation zone; and recovering alkyl glycolate and converting the alkyl glycolate to glycolic acid. |
