The invention relates to a hollow fiber membrane of an asymmetrically modified carbon molecular sieve (CMS) with improved gas separation performance properties, as well as to a method for producing a hollow fiber membrane of an asymmetrically modified CMS with improved gas separation performance. The method includes treating the polymer precursor fiber before pyrolysis with a solution containing a modifying agent. The concentration of the modifying agent in the solution can be chosen so as to obtain a hollow fiber membrane from an asymmetrically modified CMS with the desired combination of gas permeability and selectivity. The treated precursor fiber is then pyrolyzed to form a hollow fiber membrane of an asymmetrically modified CMS with improved gas permeability. |
