abstract The invention relates to the use of a polynucleotide containing a regenerative gene for respiratory R2R cells; the use of a protein encoded by the R2R gene; the use of an antisense oligonucleotide capable of modulating the expression of the R2R gene; the use of an antibody or antigen binding fragment thereof capable of binding to a protein encoded by the R2R gene and to the corresponding pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment of cardiac and pulmonary diseases or conditions, as well as cancer. In addition, the invention relates to a method for the diagnosis of these diseases or conditions, based on the detection of the level of expression of the R2R gene, and a method of testing the compound for its ability to modulate the expression of the R2R gene. The invention also relates to an animal model for the study of cardiac and pulmonary diseases or conditions, as well as cancer.
