abstract | A method for extracting hydrocarbons from a subterranean formation is disclosed, comprising the following steps: (i) bringing the hydrocarbon from the subterranean formation into contact with steam or water; (ii) bringing the hydrocarbon from the subterranean formation into contact with one or more derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons, said derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons containing at least one functional group selected from hydroxyl, alkoxy, carbonyl and ester groups, as well as their combinations; while the hydrocarbon from the subterranean formation is brought into contact with steam or water and one or more derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons inside the subterranean formation and one or more derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons are added at a concentration of from about 25 to about 50,000 parts per million (wt.) aromatic derivatives hydrocarbons in steam; and (iii) recovery of hydrocarbon from a subterranean formation. The hydrocarbon may be selected from heavy or light crude oil, bitumen, oil rich sand ore, bituminous sand ore, and combinations thereof. |
