abstract |
A method for producing dialkyl succinate from a raw material containing maleic anhydride, wherein said method comprises the steps of providing the initial reaction mixture in the liquid phase to a reactor operating at a temperature of at least about 150 ° C; contacting said feedstock with hydrogen at a pressure of at least about 300 psig. in the presence of an acid-resistant catalyst and alkanol, characterized in that at least some of the carbon-carbon double bonds of maleic anhydride are hydrogenated to form succinic acid and that the heat released promotes esterification to dialkyl succinate in situ; and recovering the dialkyl succinate containing stream from the reactor. |
