abstract The invention relates to an antimicrobial composition and disinfection method, including the use of this antimicrobial composition. More specifically, the invention relates to an antimicrobial composition for personal hygiene, oral care, or for use in cleaning surfaces. It was found that compositions containing from 0.001 to 5% by weight of one or more isopropylmethylphenols, 0.001 to 5% by weight of terpineol and a carrier, where one or more isopropylmethylphenols are selected from 3-isopropyl-5-methylphenol and 4-isopropyl-3 -methylphenol and where terpineol is selected from the group consisting of alpha-terpineol, beta-terpineol, gamma-terpineol, delta-terpineol, 4-terpineol and their mixtures, provide a synergistic antimicrobial effect. In a preferred embodiment, the composition also contains from 1 to 80% by weight of one or more surfactants.
