The invention discloses an antibacterial composition comprising from 0.01 to 10% by weight of an active essential oil selected from the group consisting of eugenol, thymol, geraniol, terpineol, and mixtures thereof; a polymer selected from the group comprising chitosan and polymers of vinyl alcohol, and mixtures thereof; and a hydrotropic substance selected from the group consisting of sodium benzoate, sodium toluene sulfonate, sodium cumensulfonate, sodium xylenesulfonate, sodium salicylate, sodium acetate, and mixtures thereof. The invention also discloses a method of providing an antibacterial effect on a substrate, comprising applying the proposed composition to the substrate and keeping for at least 15 seconds. |
