Disclosed are compounds that are derivatives of rifamycin of the formula I, where R represents hydrogen or acetyl; R and R are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, (C) alkyl, (C) alkoxy (C) alkyl, hydroxymethyl, hydroxy (C) alkyl; or R and R, taken together with two consecutive carbon atoms of the pyridine ring, form a benzene ring unsubstituted or mono- or disubstituted by one or two methyl or ethyl groups; and R 1 is hydroxy (C) alkyl. The disclosed compounds have antibacterial activity. Also described are methods for synthesizing these compounds, a pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of formula I, and the use of such a composition. |
