abstract | A method for producing dimethyl ether from an effluent stream from a methanol reactor is described. The method may include contacting an aqueous extractant containing water with an effluent stream from a methanol synthesis reactor containing methanol and one or more components selected from methane, water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and nitrogen. At least part of the methanol goes into the aqueous extractant; providing the extraction of the extract fraction containing the aqueous extractant and methanol. An extract fraction is fed to a catalytic distillation reactor system to simultaneously contact methanol with a catalyst in a reaction zone, thereby catalytically reacting at least a portion of the methanol to produce dimethyl ether and water; and fractionating the resulting dimethyl ether and water to recover a first overhead fraction containing dimethyl ether and a first bottom fraction containing water. |
