abstract The invention describes a wellbore fluid containing a continuous aqueous phase and containing: (a) at least one polymer that has a number average molecular weight in the range from 10,000 to less than 100,000 and which has a solubility in water at 20 ° C equal to not less than 2% where the polymer is selected from a copolymer of at least one hydrophilic monomer and at least one hydrophobic monomer containing an alkyl group containing at least 8 carbon atoms, in which the hydrophilic monomer is selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic acid, maleic anhydride, fumaric acid and itaconic acid, and in which sulfonate groups are introduced into the copolymer by reaction of at least part of carboxy groups and / or anhydride groups with a compound of general formula RN (CH) SOX (I) or with a compound of general formula HO (CH) SOX (II) wherein each R is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl and ethyl, X is H or a Group IA metal, and n is is an integer from 1 to 6, and the total molecular weight of said pendant alkyl groups ranges from 15 to 70 wt%, based on the weight of said polymer; and (b) at least one additive selected from the group consisting of additional fluid loss control agents, particulate plugging agents, micronized additives to increase the density of the solution, diluents and scale inhibitors. Such water-based wellbore fluids have significantly improved fluid loss properties when used in wellbore operations such as drilling, completion or workover.
