abstract |
Modified activated carbon and a method for producing modified activated carbon from an activated carbon substrate. The activated carbon support is pretreated to provide a substantially hydrophilic exposed surface of the support, coated with a carbon precursor to form a coated activated carbon support, and then the activated carbon support is heated to carbonize the carbon precursor to form a modified activated carbon. The modified activated carbon contains a uniform porous carbon membrane formed on the exposed surface of the activated carbon substrate. The carbon membrane can affect the absorption and / or adsorption kinetics of the activated carbon used as the support. The modified activated carbon, which may be included in one or more cigarette components, can selectively remove gaseous smoke components from mainstream smoke during smoking. |
