Sulfonamides of the formula I in which the substituents have the following meaning: R is hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyl or alkynyl and R, R, R and R are hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or halomethyl; R1 and R3 may also jointly form a phenyl, cyclopentyl or cyclohexyl ring, which ring may have two groups R and R, R, R3 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or halomethyl; in case a), if R, R, R and R are hydrogen: X is phenyl, which is substituted by the group -C (R) = NOR, where R is alkyl and R is alkyl, benzyl, alkenyl, haloalkyl, haloalkenyl, alkynyl or haloalkynyl; and in case b), if at least one of the groups R, R, R and R is not hydrogen: X is phenyl, naphthyl or a five- or six-membered C-linked saturated, partially unsaturated or aromatic heterocycle containing from one to four heteroatoms from the group consisting of O, N or S, and X may be substituted as described.
