titleOfInvention Method of Reversible Change of Viscosity of a Liquid and Method of Using a Thickened Liquid to Carry Solids
abstract Method for reversibly altering the viscosity of a liq. comprises: (i) contacting the liq. with a viscoelastic surfactant to increase its viscosity; and (ii) breaking the viscosity of the liq. from stage (i) by a method not requiring an increase in shear; with the possibility of substantially restoring the viscosity to that obtd. in stage (i). The viscoelastic surfactant may be (a) ionic, comprising a surfactant ion having a hydrophobic moiety chemically bonded to an ionic, hydrophilic moiety, and with a sufficient amt. of a counter ion with a moiety capable of associating with the surfactant ion; or (b) nonionic, comprising a hydrophobic moiety chemically bonded to a nonionic hydrophilic moiety. Surfactants of class (a) may have formulae (I) or (II), R(Z-)A+ (I) or R(Y+)X- (II) R = hydrophobic moiety, Z- = anionic solubilising moiety chemically bonded to R, Y+ = cationic solubilising moiety chemically bonded to R, A+ = counter ion associated with Z-, X- = counter ion associated with Y+. Pref. class (a) surfactants are fluoroaliphatic species, and the liq. is pref. aq. The electrolyte providing the counter ion may be in stoichiometric excess of the surfactant ion. Suitable cationic perfluorocarbons are given in US 3,775,126 and suitable anionic perfluorocarbons in US 3,172,910. The counter ions required are respectively anionic, e.g. various aromatic carboxylates, and cationic, e.g. various quaternary ammonium ions. The concn. of viscoelastic surfactant is pref. 0.01-10 wt.%.
