titleOfInvention Process for activating smectite clay minerals
abstract Bentonite clays are activated by blending a clay, having an H2O content of 25-50 wt.% homogeneously with an acid. The ratio of clay to acid is chosen so that the mixture has a dry to mouldable consistency. The mixture is stored for a few days and the activated clay is then further processed to form an H- exchanged clay or an active or bleaching earth. Also claimed is an activated mixture of bentonite clay and acid with a dry to mouldable consistency.
