abstract Precautions are taken, so that an SPF value can be calculated in vitro, with good agreement with an in vivo SPF value, by using a common calculation equation independently of the material type used. The transmitted UV intensities I( lambda ) are corrected by corresponding erythemal efficiency coefficients EE( lambda ) to calculate the erythema-induced UV intensity EUI, and the elements of I( lambda ) from lambda = 320 to 400 nm are summed to calculate a transmitted UV-A intensity; after this, a theoretical value alpha TH for the base alpha of the efficiency of the photosuperelevation alpha <UVA> is calculated from the ratio UV-A/EUI, and by using EUI x alpha TH<UVA>, a theoretical final value EUIUL of EUI is calculated. If EUIUL is greater than 75, the SPF value is calculated from 1350/EUIUL; otherwise, the SPF value is calculated with the aid of an empirical equation.
