In accordance with the invention, a catalyst is prepared which is capable of forming an olefin homopolymer or copolymer of high molecular weight and relatively broad molecular weight distribution in high yield using an extremely small amount of a modified organoaluminium compound (in particular methylaluminoxane). The catalyst contains a modified organoaluminium compound and a catalyst component comprising the following compounds (1) and (2): (1) a compound of the formula RpMX4-p, in which M is a transition metal from the group IVa of the Periodic Table, R is a cyclopentadienyl, substituted cyclopentadienyl, indenyl, substituted indenyl or aralkyl group having 7 to 24 carbon atoms, with the proviso that the radicals R can be bonded to one another via an alkylene group having 2 to 8 carbon atoms and/or a silylene group, X is a halogen atom, a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 24 carbon atoms and p has a value which satisfies the condition 1 </= p </= 4; and (2) a compound containing a carbon-fluorine bond. |
