abstract Detecting the possible presence of an antimicrobial cpd. (I) in a sample comprises:(a) adding the sample to a culture medium;(b) growing a microorganism (II) in the medium, (II) being susceptible to inhibition by (I);(c) measuring an electrical parameter of the medium over a period of time;(d) determining a first time, T1, at which an accelerating change of the parameter occurs, resulting from the growth of (II), and(e) comparing T1 to a number of points, Tn to determine the presence of (I). Tn are determined in a manner similar to T1, except that (I) is present in the culture medium in a known concn.. A relationship exists between Tn and the corresp. concn. of (I). Also claimed is a method for testing the resistance of a microorganism (II) to an antimicrobial cpd. (I), which comprises:(i) growing (II) in a culture medium containing (I);(ii) as steps (c) and (d) above;(iii) comparing T1 with a second time T2, which is determined as for T1 except that (I) is absent. (II) is defined as resistant to (I) when T1=T2, and as not resistant when T1>T2.
