titleOfInvention Single and multiple electrolysis cells and arrangements thereof for the deionization of aqueous media
abstract Described is an electrochemical cell for the deionization of aqeuous solutions, the cell being equipped with an inlet and outlet for the solution to be deionized, plus supply and discharge pipes for the brine flow. The cell is also equipped with an ion exchanger and with electrodes linked on the inside to electrode spaces between which, separated by membranes, a brine space is located. The aim of the invention is to provide an electrochemical cell of this kind which can be controlled and regulated directly by means of the applied electric field and the applied electric current. To this end, the brine space is directly adjacent to the electrode spaces and the electrode spaces and the electrode spaces are filled with ion-exchange material, the cathode space containing an anion exchanger and the anode space containing a cation exchanger. In addition, the electrodes are in direct contact with the anion-exchange resin and cation-exchange resin beds. Multiple electrolytic cells consist of at least two cells of the type described which are disposed next to each other. Either the electrode spaces of the same type of electrode or the electrode spaces of different electrodes are located next to each other and have a common electrode, the electrode spaces being separated from each other by a bipolar membrane or a bipolar electrode.
