abstract |
A nuclear reactor having a typical arrangement of fuel rods within fuel elements within a reactor core uses fuel pellets (4) comprising uranium dioxide or a mixt. of UO2 and PuO2 (10) encapsulated within a non-oxidising ceramic material (11-13) such as SiC. The fuel pellets are then arranged axially in the normal manner within a fuel rod (2). In addn. to the novel fuel pellets, below the reactor core is arranged a perforated high temp. resistant collector. In the event of a meltdown, this collects the still-solid fuel pellets whilst permitting the molten metal components to pass through. |
