titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of 1,4-diisocyanatobutane (BDI) |
abstract | Prodn. of 1,4-butylene diisocyanate (I) comprises (a) converting 1,4-butanediamine (II) to a dialkyl or diaryl 1,4-butanedicarbamate (III) and (b) thermally decomposing (III) at 100-600 deg C. and fractionally condensing the decompsn. prods. to give (I) and the corresp. alcohol or phenol (IV). Step (a) is pref. effected by (i) reacting (III) with urea and an alcohol at elevated temp., opt. in the presence of a catalyst, and opt. removing the NH3 formed, or (ii) reacting (II) with a dialkyl carbonate in the presence of a basic catalyst, esp. NaOMe. In case (i), the alcohol should have a b.pt. more than 10 deg C. below that of (I), and is esp. n-butanol. In case (ii), the dialkyl carbonate should be such that (IV) has a b.pt. more than 10 deg C. below that of (I), and is esp. dimethyl carbonate. Step (b) is effected at 180-300 deg C. and 1-500 mbar in the liq. phase, opt. in a high-boiling inert solvent, with continuous distn. of the decompsn. prods., followed by fractional condensn. to give a (I)-rich fraction and a (IV)-rich fraction, both of which are purified by fractional distn.. |
