titleOfInvention Gas discharge type display device and method of manufacturing the same
abstract A plate-shaped display device of the gas-discharge type has an anode and a cathode, which cathode has a specific form for the purpose of improving the discharge in an airtight chamber which is formed by two substrates. A gas, which contains a gas which emits ultraviolet radiation, such as for example Xe and Kr, and a fluorescent (luminescent) material for emitting light are jointly inserted into the airtight chamber. As a result of the shape of the cathode, there is more discharge than in the case of devices according to the state of the art. A stronger ultraviolet emission as a result of the discharge excites the fluorescent material to generate a visible radiation. The brightness of the device is increased thereby. Since the cathode is coated with an emitter material which is incapable of absorbing the gas which emits the ultraviolet radiation, what is achieved is that not only is the discharge not impeded by the reduction of the gas which emits the ultraviolet radiation, but also the colour of the visible radiation can be maintained in a stable manner.
