abstract | An encapsulated acid composition includes an aqueous solution of acid encapsulated in a polymeric material which is chemically resistant to the acid in the aqueous solution of acid and which polymeric material is substantially impermeable to water and acid. The composition is prepared according to a process including the steps of forming an emulsion having a continuous phase of oil and a dispersed phase of an aqueous solution of acid; mixing the emulsion with a polymer which is soluble in said oil and insoluble in the aqueous solution of acid, the polymer being chemically resistant to the acid in the aqueous solution of acid and the polymer being substantially impervious to the acid and to water; and mixing the emulsion and the polymer with a cross-linking agent so as to encapsulate droplets of the dispersed phase of the aqueous solution of acid in a cross-linked polymer encapsulant. The composition is particularly useful for treating subterranean formations e.g. in stimulation of wells. |
