abstract The gain coupled laser diode has an active layer in a layered waveguide (4). The diode also has a grating layer (3) and a contact layer (2). The grating layer (3) is arranged between the waveguide (4) and the contact layer (2). The contact layer (2) is not crystalline and is attached directly to the grating layer (3). The grating layer (3) is provided with a periodic structure for mode selection. The material of the grating layer (3) and the contact layer (2) each bring about an absorption and a field displacement.
