abstract The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of cyclic N-azidosulphonylarylimides of the formula <IMAGE> where Ar is an aromatic hydrocarbon radical, by chlorosulphonation of the corresponding cyclic arylimides to give the corresponding sulphonyl chlorides and subsequent reaction of the sulphonyl chlorides with sodium azide and/or other alkali metal azides to give the cyclic N-azidosulphonylarylimides. The process is characterised in that the radicals R<1> and R<2> can be identical or different, are hydrogen or saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals and can be constituents of a ring.
