abstract |
A process for producing a polymeric material which comprises mixing reactants, optionally in the presence of a solvent to form a liquid stream of reactants, heating the stream and providing a sufficient reaction time to form the polymeric material, characterized by the following: rapidly heating the reactant stream in a microwave resonance cavity using microwave energy generated in a TM 0n0 (transverse magnetic mode) form of minimal heating at the radial boundaries of the stream, and Continuing the reaction as the stream continues to flow in a substantially flow through an annular zone having a volume controlled to provide a total residence time from the time the reactant stream enters the microwave cavity to the time the product is delivered is taken from the ring zone, which is constant and independent of the mass flow. |
