New silanes of formula (I) are claimed. R1, R2, R3 are aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon gps.; R4 is 3-14C divalent hydrocarbon gp.; R5 is -O(CH2)b or a polyether residue of formula -(OCnH2n)c; b is 1-6; n has average value 2-2.5; c is 1-10; R6 is -OSO3X or -OR7; X is H, alkali or (substd.) NH4; R7 is H, 1-4C alkyl or acetyl; a is 0 or 1; and if R6 is -OR7, then a is 1. (I) are prepd. by (a) addn. of cpds. of formula (a1) to silanes of formula (a2) in presence of a hydrosilation catalyst, followed opt. by (b) sulphation of the prod. of formula (b1) and neutralisation with alkali hydroxide or NH4OH in which the H atoms on the N may be substd.. Reaction (a) is at raised temp. and/or in presence of a solvent, using a Pt catalyst. USE/ADVANTAGE - Use of (I) as surfactants in aq. media (claimed). (I) are stable against hydrolysis in acid and alkaline media. Addn. of 1% of (I) to aq. solns. lowers the surface tension to 21 mN/m. |
