Microbial mixed culture for the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, in particular from tar oils |
abstract |
Mixed microbial cultures for degrading polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, esp. in tar oils, comprise two Pseudomonas strains with growth rates differing by a factor of at least 2. Also claimed are Pseudomonas putida Teer A (DSM 7248) and Pseudomonas sp. Teer B (DSM 7249). Also claimed is a method for selecting tar-oil-degrading mixed cultures, comprising: (a) mechanically emulsifying tar oil in an aq. soln. of yeast extract and/or peptone; (b) adding activated sludge and/or soil samples to the emulsion; (c) continuously fermenting the emulsion under aerobic conditions while increasing the tar oil content in stages; and (d) adapting the preferentially growing culture to growth on tar oil as the sole C source. USE - The cultures may be used to treat wood or other materials contaminated or impregnated with tar oil. |
