titleOfInvention Free-piston exergy internal combustion engine with reduced fuel consumption
abstract In the free piston exergy internal combustion engine applied for, a steam expansion process acting in the cylinder of the engine, which obtains its energy from the exhaust gases prior to the exhaust stroke, from the temperature of the cylinder walls, etc., is added to the expansion process of the combustion gases on the output side. In piston internal combustion engines virtually two thirds of the energy is lost. An improved efficiency can be achieved by modifying the operating principle if the cylinder is designed for more than twice the piston stroke which would be necessary. At the end of the first half stroke the plasma in the cylinder still has a temperature, for example, of 500 to 800@C. Water/steam is then injected, which is heated in an exhaust gas heat exchanger and has been prepressurised in excess of the pressure prevailing at the end of the first half stroke. As a result, the temperature of the plasma falls but the superheating of the steam increases. The piston thus also obtains a corresponding thrust for the second half stroke (without fresh fuel supply). The exhaust stroke and the intake and compression stroke ensue as in normal four-stroke engines.
