titleOfInvention Pins for holding fractured bones together whilst the fracture is healing - are made from biologically degradable polymer and do not need to be removed after the fracture has healed
abstract Fractured bones are held together in order to heal the fracture by means of pins made from a biologically degradable polymer of high density and with a high degree of orientation in the direction of the main molecular axis. The pins are formed by first heating pellets of the polymer to a temperature of 140 deg. C. and then extruding the material through a die of the appropriate diameter. The polymer has a density which is equal to or greater than 1.260 grm. per CC. and its physical properties are defined by the equations which define flexural strength and fatigue flexural strength. A is equal to or greater than B which is equal to or greater than 23 kg per sq. mm. and B/A is equal to or greater than 0.85 where A is the initial flexural strength and B is the flexural strength after a 90 day immersion of the pin in a phosphate buffer solution at 37 deg. C. ADVANTAGE - No operation is required to remove the pins after the fracture has healed.
