titleOfInvention | Pins for holding fractured bones together whilst the fracture is healing - are made from biologically degradable polymer and do not need to be removed after the fracture has healed |
abstract | Fractured bones are held together in order to heal the fracture by means of pins made from a biologically degradable polymer of high density and with a high degree of orientation in the direction of the main molecular axis. The pins are formed by first heating pellets of the polymer to a temperature of 140 deg. C. and then extruding the material through a die of the appropriate diameter. The polymer has a density which is equal to or greater than 1.260 grm. per CC. and its physical properties are defined by the equations which define flexural strength and fatigue flexural strength. A is equal to or greater than B which is equal to or greater than 23 kg per sq. mm. and B/A is equal to or greater than 0.85 where A is the initial flexural strength and B is the flexural strength after a 90 day immersion of the pin in a phosphate buffer solution at 37 deg. C. ADVANTAGE - No operation is required to remove the pins after the fracture has healed. |
