titleOfInvention Process for surface modification of glass and glass ceramics
abstract Surface modification of a glass(ceramic) ic carried out in an atmosphere essentially of a Bronsted acid at 100-700 deg.C for 5 mins. to 100 hrs. Pref. the treatment atmosphere is produced by feeding a solution, emulsion or suspension containing the acid continuously or discontinuously into a furnace and vaporising. USE/ADVANTAGE - Process is used to change the surface of the glass to enable decorative colouring to sink into the surface. As a less concentrated acid is used, less salt deposit remains on the glass surface and is easily removed without having to use mechanical brushing etc. This leads to reduced surface cracking.
