titleOfInvention Hardenable molding compounds
abstract Curable moulding compsn. (I) contains a mixt. of 100 (wt.) pts. unsatd. polyester (II); 20-100 pts. (meth)acrylate ester (III), which is free from OH gps. and has mol.wt. over 200; 20-100 pts. (meth)acrylate ester (IV) contg. OH gps.; 5-50 pts. thermoplastic polymer powder (V), which is insol. but can swell in a mixt. of (II)+(III)+(IV) and has Tg less than 80 deg.C; 0.2-5 pts. thickener (VI); 0-30 pts. conventional antishrink thermoplastics, other than (V); 0.1-4 pts. free radical initiator; 0-350 pts. conventional inorg. filler (VII); 0-300 pts. fibrous reinforcement (VIII); 0-0.1 pt. stabiliser; 0-10 pts. release agent; 0-30 pts. pigment; and 0-5 pts. plasticiser. (III) is trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (IIIA); tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate; pentaerythrityl tetraacrylate; dihydrodicyclopentadienyl acrylate; polytetrahydrofuran diacrylate; or the reaction prod. of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether with 2 mole methacrylic acid. (IV) is hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl (meth)acrylate. (V) swells at least 10% in the mixt. of (II)+(III)+(IV) and has an average particle size of 2-200, pref. 5-100 microns. It pref. consists of polyethylene, polypropylene or a copolymer of ethylene with propylene, vinyl acetate or an acrylate ester. (I) contains 30-80 pts. (III), 30-80 pts. (IV), 10-40 pts. (V), 0.5-3 pts. (VI), 20-100 pts. (VII) and 20-150 pts. (VIII). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is esp. useful for making fibre-reinforced mouldings, e.g. for use in cars, aircraft, telecommunications, machines, appts. and the chemical industry. (I) contains no free styrene monomer and has at least as good mechanical properties, esp. elasticity, as commercially available compsns. The use of (V) instead of the usual inorg. fillers greatly improves the properties and also increases e.g. the wt. saving, dimensional stability, weather resistance and adhesion of lacquers or metallic or organic coatings.
