abstract Quaternary aminopolyols (I), prepd. by (a) subjecting epoxide cpds. to a ring-opening reaction with an amino sugar of formula ZNHR1 (where Z is a glycoside or oligoglycoside residue with 1-10 glucose units, and R1 is H, 1-18C alkyl or 1-18C hydroxyalkyl) and (b) quaternising the prod. with an alkylating agent or an alkylene oxide, are new. The cpds. are prepd. from epoxide cpds. of formulae (II), (III) or (IV). The amino sugar is glucamine or N-methyl glucamine. The molar ratio of epoxide to amino sugar is 1:0.5-1.5 (based on the epoxide content). The alkylating agent is a methyl halide, dimethyl sulphate or dimethyl phosphate. The molar ratio of amino sugar to alkylating agent is 1:0.5-1, and the molar ratio of amino sugar to alkylene oxide is 1:1-10. Step (b) is carried out in the presence of a short chain aliphatic alcohol. The reaction is carried out at 80-150 deg.C. R2 = 1-22C alkyl; R3 = H or 1-22C alkyl; R4CO = unsatd. 16-22C acyl; R5 = 1-4C alkyl; R6CO, R7CO, R8CO = unsatd. 16-24C alkyl. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful in prodn. of antistatic agents for tissue and textile surfaces. The cpds. are dispersible in cold water and biodegradable. They can be formed into concentrates of low viscosity.
