Producing copolymer lattices (I) by emulsion polymerisation of a mixt. contg. (a) conjugated diene(s), (b) ethylenic monomer(s) and (c) unsatd. carboxylic acid(s), comprises polymerising (i) at least part of the monomer mixt. in the presence of a hydrophilic chain-transfer agent (II) to give a copolymer latex and (ii) the rest of the monomer mixt. is polymerised in the presence of this latex and a hydrophobic chain-transfer agent (III). Also claimed are copolymer lattices (I) as such, and paper coating compsns. contg. (I). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful as binders in paper-coating compsns., esp. for paper to be used in offset rotary printing, and as laminating agents or adhesives for producing carpets. (I) have an excellent balance of adhesive properties, water-resistance, ink acceptance, sheet glaze etc |
