abstract Process for producing microparticles is characterised in that 'it arises by a controlled demulsification process in a step for forming a drug-loaded polymer matrix, which is surrounded by a shell of a second polymer'. Also claimed are microparticles produced by the above process, where: (1) the particles have an ave. dia. below 50 microns and contain water-soluble drugs; (2) the particles permit oral admin. of bad-tasting water-soluble drugs in a neutral-tasting form; or (3) the particles are capable of releasing the drug in a pH-dependent manner, the pH range for release being controllable by the choice of synthetic polymers. Also claimed are pharmaceutical compsns. comprising microparticles produced by the above process and any additives, which can be suspended in a liq. before oral ingestion. The particles are formed by solidification of several polymers dissolved in the internal phase of an emulsion, both by solvent evapn. and by addn. of a non-solvent.
