abstract A process for the prodn. of unsatd. esters (I) involves (a) esterification of a cpd. with 2 or more COOH gps. (II) with a (meth)acrylate contg. an epoxide gp. (III) in the presence of an organic Zn salt as catalyst, to give a COOH-contg. (meth)acrylate (IV), and (b) esterification of (IV) with a polyepoxide cpd. (V) in the presence of amines, amine-acid adducts, quat. ammonium salts, amides, imidazoles, pyridines, phosphines, phosphonium salts and/or sulphonium salts as catalyst. USE/ADVANTAGE - A process enables the prodn. of unsatd. esters with 2 or more (meth)acrylate gps. (i.e. vinyl ester resins) (I), without gel-formation during the process. W.r.t. prior-art methods, this process enables a greater variation in the mol. structure of (I) and hence a greater range of physical properties and applications.
