titleOfInvention | Method and reagent for water determination |
abstract | A method for quantitative analysis of water by mixing an aq. sample with an aprotic solvent soln. of a 1:1 SO2/amine of pKa above 6 adduct and then oxidising with iodine; and a 2-component reagent comprising a solvent component reagent comprising a solvent component and an iodine soln. as titration components, the solvent component contg. an aprotic solvent soln. of an adduct as per (A) above are claimed as is a 1-component reagent comprising an aprotic solvent soln. contg. both I2 (or an iodide) and an adduct as per (A) above. The amine used in the adduct is Me3N (esp. prefd.), imidazole and/or N,N,N',N'-tetra-Me-ethylenediamine. The aprotic solvent is an ether, ester, halo-hydrocarbon, acid amide, nitrile, and/or ketone, esp. acetonitrile, propylene carbonate, Et acetate, THF, dioxan, DMF and/or CH2Cl2. The concn. of the adduct in the solvent is 0.01-5 (esp. 0.25-1.5) mol./l. ADVANTAGE - Volumetric or coulometric water analysis can be effected by straight- or back-titration without the problems of toxicity, odour or high sensitivity to experimental conditions associated with prior-art alcohol- and/or pyridine-contg. Karl-Fischer reagents. |
