titleOfInvention Aromatic copolyamides, process for their preparation and structures formed therefrom
abstract Aromatic copolyamides (I) with inherent viscosity (i.v.) at least 3.5 (esp. 4.5) dl/g (0.25% soln. in NMP), which are soluble in polyamide solvents, are claimed. (I) contain 40-65 mol.% units of formula (Ia), 5-55 mol.% units (Ib), 5-35 mol.% (Ic) and opt. 0-30 mol.% (Id), where R1 = unsubstd. arylene (at least 80 mol.% linked in para-, corresp. coaxial or parallel positions, and up to 20 mol.% linked in meta- or corresp. angled positions); R2 = unsubstd. arylene (para-, coaxially- or parallel-linked); R3 = a gp. which is different from R2, with formula (II) and/or (III) and/or (IV) and/or (V): (with Hal = halogen, R4 = 1-6C alkyl or alkoxy and/or Hal); X, Y = S, SO2, CO or O. Also claimed is a process for producing (I), by reacting diacid chlorides of formula ClOC-R1-COCl with diamines corresp. to units (Ib), (Ic) and (Id). Specifically X and Y = O; at least 90 (pref. 100) mol.% of all R1 gps. = 1,4-phenylene and up to 10 mol.% = 1,3-phenylene; R2 = 1,4-phenylene. Amts. of units are 45-55 mol.% (Ia), 35-45 mol.% (Ib), 5-25 mol.% (Ic) and 0 or 5-20 mol.% (Id). Also claimed are moulded prods. obtd. from (I), esp. fibres, films and coatings, partic. fibres with strength 90-250 (pref. above 200, esp. pref. 200-250) cN/tex, initial modulus (100% elongation) 25-60 N/tex, elongation at break 3-7% and loop strength above 80 (pref. 85-120) cN/tex. Also claimed is a process for producing fibres from (I), by spinning the fibres, applying an aq. suspension of a stable prepn. contg. particles of inert inorganic material as fibre lubricant, drying to form a layer of lubricant and stretching the treated fibre at above 300 (pref. 350-550) deg.C. Also claimed is the use of fibres of (I) for reinforcing plastics, esp. elastomers, and the use of films of (I) for producing membranes.
