Microporous, water-repellent, non-flammable and abrasion-resistant inorganic composite materials and moulded prods. with high thermal stability are claimed (I). (I) contain (a) a microporous, water-repellent, non-flammable inorganic filler (I) and (b) a non-flammable or difficultly-ignitable porous matrix material consisting of carbon. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (I), by (i) combining filler (II) with a soln. of binder (III), opt. using a processing aid, to give a homogeneous material, (ii) moulding this material, (iii) drying in air at 100-250 deg.C, heat-treating and opt. moulding, and (iv) pyrolysing at 250-1200 deg.C under inert gas or vacuum. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used as adsorbents, catalysts and catalysts supports for sepn., purification and catalytic processes, esp. involving the removal of toxic and environmentally harmful substances from air streams, off-gas and aq. effluents. The invention provides an economical process for the prodn. of composite materials in various forms as required (e.g. spheres, cylinders, pellets, with the necessary mechanical and thermal stability for use in fluid bed processes, etc. |
