titleOfInvention Modified poly sugar as an orientation layer for liquid crystal displays
abstract LCD orientation film contains (a) oligo/polymer(s) of a 6-membered cyclic sugar unit, in which the free OH gps. may be (partly) converted to derivs., with equatorial substits. in ring positions, 2, 3 and 6; and (b) the macrocyclic cpd(s)., cryptand(s), coronand(s), podant(s), mercapto cpd(s). and/or ionophore(s). The prodn. of the orientation film and the LCD contg. this are also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - The film is used in ferroelectric LCDs (claimed). Covalent bonds are formed between components (a) and (b) and/or (b) is physically adsorbed on (a) (claimed). The LCDs have good contrast and light transmission values and very good liquid crystal (LC) orientation. They form very stable switches and displays. Uniform and twist-free (quasi)bookshelf orientation can be produced and LCDs damage by shock can be regenerated. In an example, (A) a clean ITO-coated glass plate was spin coated with a 0.25% aq. soln. of methylhydroxypropylcellulose (IV) and cured 60 min. at 120 deg. C. This was spin coated with a 0.5% soln. of (III) in 1,4-dioxane, cured 30 min. at 120 deg. C to form a chemical bond with (IV), cleaned to remove excess (III) and rubbed with a velvety cloth. PVA was used instead of (IV) for a control (B). When used in an LCD filled with a ferroelectric LC mixt., the effective tilt angle (chevron texture) was (A) 11, (B) 10.5 deg.; LC orientation (A) good to very good, (B) good; max. bias up to 50 micro-s pulse width (A) ca. 8, (b) ca. 7; and (A, B) there was no twist.
