abstract Equipment for direct measurement of the electrochemical properties of a fluid (I) with high resistance has (a) an electrolytic soln. (II); (b) a housing with a porous membrane (III), which contains (II) and is immersed in (I); and (c) electrodes, which can be immersed in (II) and measure the electrochemical properties of (I). (III) permits the passage of part of (I) into (II) or part of (II) into (I). Pref. (I) does not dissolve in (II). Pref. (II) is an aq. soln. and (I) is immiscible with (II); or (II) consists of a polar organic solvent based on a sulphoxide, esp. dimethyl sulphate, which pref. contains Li chlorate, or on a carbonate. Pref. the housing is a glass cylinder. The electrodes include a reference electrode (pref. of Ag/AgCl) and a working electrode, which is placed on, esp. sputtered on or bonded to, the surface of (III) in contact with (II). The appts. is used for continuous determn. of the electrochemical properties of (I) by using (III) to provide a continuous interface between (II) and (I) and measuring the properties of (I) at this interface and in the presence of (II). USE/ADVANTAGE - The sensor avoids the need for sample prepn. It is suitable for determining e.g. oil quality.
