titleOfInvention | METHOD FOR IMPROVING THE MECHANICAL STRENGTH OF HIGH SPEED AND / OR SHOCK WAVES SUBJECT TO AMMUNITION BODIES, ESPECIALLY SUCH WITH HOLLOW CHARGES AND THE USE THEREOF |
abstract | (A) A method of improving the resistance to high acceleration and/or shock waves of munitions, contg. hollow charges which have a surface treated sheath and/or a lining, involves (a) applying adhesive (130,150) to the outside of the lining (8,13) and the inside of the sheath (9,15); and (b) then pouring or pressing the explosive charge (14,16) into the cavity between the lining and the sheath. Pref. the adhesive is a styrene-contg. copolymer lacquer. (B) Also claimed are (i) an adhesive layer of 1-100 microns thickness for the method (A); (ii) use of the method for prodn. of tandem hollow charges; and (iii) use of the method for improving the mechanical stability of hollow charges of cast TNT or hexolite and of pressed hexogen-based or octagen hollow charges. ADVANTAGE - Adhesion between the explosive and the sheath or lining is increased to reduce transmission and formation of undesired shock effects on the charge (esp. tandem hollow charges), thus avoiding premature or sympathetic deterioration. Conventional mfg. processes do not require modification. |
