abstract In producing a chemical sensor for measuring hydrogen ion concn., colour changes in a photo-indicator material are automatically detected. A soln. contg. a polymer is prepd. using an organic solvent, this soln. is deposited in a thin film on a substrate material, and the film is then dried. A photo-sensitive material and a photo-indicator are added to the soln. and the thin film is deposited on a suitable polymer substrate. After drying, the film is structured using a photo-lithographic process, and both the lithographically treated and untreated parts of the film are fixed. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for measuring hydrogen ion concn. in aq. solns. or moist gases. The sensor is compact and stable, and achieves a high accuracy of pH measurement in industrial applications. The end faces of the sensor are suitable for polishing so that light can be efficiently transferred into and out of the photo-indicator film.
