titleOfInvention METHOD FOR CONTINUOUS POLYMERIZATION OF VINYL MONOMERS
abstract The continuous polymerisation of vinyl monomers by formation of vinyl polymers (I) with a mol. wt. of 1000-20,000 is claimed. The polymerisation is carried out at 110-270 deg. C in a ring slit (slit width 0.5-1.00 mm) that is bounded on the inner side by a rotor. Also claimed is the use of (I) as binding agents for paints, protective coatings, paper coating materials and printing inks. The reaction temp. is 150-270 deg. C and the polymer dispersivity (Mw/Mn) of (I) is less than 3.5. A portion of the volumetric flow is recirculated through the ring slit such that the recycle ratio of recirculated volumetric flow to throughput is 2-35. The rotor promotes reacton by thorough mixing and has a tangential avelocity of 0.5-2 m/s. The reaction is carried out in 0-40% of a solvent (w.r.t. monomer). The mixt. of monomers comprises 60-100 wt.% (meth)acrylic acid esters. Polymerisation initiator is added in a molar ratio of 0.0005:1 to 0.1:1 (w.r.t. monomer).
