titleOfInvention | POLYMER PARTICLES AND TWO-COMPONENT TONERS AND METHOD FOR THEIR PRODUCTION |
abstract | Suspension polymerisation to produce polymer particles or heat-fixable, two-component toners involves (i) dispersing a mixt. of 100 pts. vinyl monomer (mixt.) and 1-10 pts. polymerisation initiator (and also, when toners are being produced, 2-20 pts. pigment and/or dye, 0-5 pts. crosslinker, 0-10 pts. charge controller and 0-10 pts. anti-offset agent) in 200-1000 pts. of an aq. suspension of 1-10 pts. positively-charged, hydrophobic, highly-dispersed Si02 at pH 2-7 to give a droplet size distribution with ave. particle size 2-10 microns; (ii) effecting polymerisation in this pH range at 60-95 deg.C; (iii) controlling the elec. and triboelec. properties of the prod. in step (i), step (ii) or in the final dry state by modifying the Si02 covering the polymer particles (or toner) either by polymerisation-on an ionic monomer (mixt.) or by coating with water-sol. or -insol. (in)org. solid particles or water-emulsifiable materials; (iv) mixing the polymer or toner aq. suspension with water at the conclusion of the polymerisation (or the modification process); and (v) sepg. off the prod. and opt. classifying it. USE/ADVANTAGE - The polymer particles, which are of narrow size distribution in the range 10 microns or below, can be used as medical diagnostic reagents, sorbents in biotechnology for cell immobilisation or column materials for HPLC analysis. The toners can be used in electrostatic printing or copying appts. The advantages of this microsuspension polymerisation (e.g. 1.5-3 hr. polymerisation time) are first (1) the use of hydrophobic aerosils as colloidal stabilisers allows easy prodn. of spherical particles with narrow size- and charge-distribution, good flowability, high static elec. resistivity of over 10 power 14 ohm.m and good triboelec. chargeability; (2) the high coalescence stability in steps (i) and (ii) allows the H20:monomer ratio to be raised to 2:1 without adverse effect on size parameters and so allows the high productivity; (3) yields of 90-95% can be achieved without the need for troublesome classification to remove fines or coarse particles; (4) charge/dia. ratios can be controlled within an extremely narrow range; and (5) in toner prodn. the modification step imparts high surface hydrophobicisation to pigments such as C black, giving good pigment dispersability in the monomer mixt. (e.g. styrene - n.Bu (meth)acrylate) and 2 marked viscosity decrease in the pigment/monomer mixt. |
