abstract 3-Methylsulphonyl hydrazono steroids of formula (I) are new; where C4-C5, C14-C15 and C15-C16 are single or double bonds, provided that C15-C16 is single if C14-C15 is double; R1= H or Me; R4=H, or may also be Me or Cl when C4-C5 is double; R6 and R'6= H, or R6+R'6= CH2 or CH2CH, or R'6 may also be Me when R6= H and C4-C5 is double; R7= H, or may also be a 1-4C satd. hydrocarbyl or 2-4C unsatd. hydrocarbyl gp. in the alpha or beta posn. when R6= R'6= H; R11= H, F or Cl; R'11= H; or R11+R'11= CH2; R15 and R16= H or 1-4C alkyl in the alpha or beta posn., or R15+R16= 15alpha,16alpha- or 15beta,16beta-methylene; R17= H, 1-4C alkyl, vinyl, ethynyl, bromoethynyl, chloroethynyl, propynyl, hydroxypropynyl, 3-hydroxy-1-propenyl or CH2CN. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are antiandrogenic agents which have comparable activity to cyproterone acetate but which act only peripherally, without centrally controlled gene regulation. They may be used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, androgen-dependent prostatic carcinoma and other androgen-mediated diseases.
