2,4,6-Tris(thiocyanatomethylthio)- 1,3,5-triazine (Ia) is new. Also claimed is prodn. of thiocyanatomethylthio-substd. cpds. of formula (I) by reacting an alkali(ne earth) metal or NH4 salt of a mercapto cpd. of formula R(SH)n (II) with the stoichiometric amt. of methylene bisthiocyanate R(SCH2SCN)n (III). In the formulae, R = an aliphatic, alicyclic, aromatic or heteroaromatic gp.; n = 1-4. The reaction is pref. effected at 10-100 (esp. 40-70) deg.C in H2O. (II) pref. have R = a 5- or 6-membered heteroaromatic gp. contg. 2 or 3 heteroatoms. USE/ADVANTAGE - Cpds. (I), including (Ia), are biocides, esp. with fungicidal and algicidal activity. The process gives high yields (e.g., 86-96%) in shorter reaction times than prior art processes |
