titleOfInvention METHOD FOR PRODUCING A GAS GENERATING MATERIAL
abstract Prodn. of material (I) is carried out in stages involving: (a) making a hot soln. of a metal azide (II) with metal oxide particles (III) suspended in the soln.; (b) pptg. (II) from the soln. by cooling the hot soln. and then (c) removing the (II) ppte. and (III) from the solvent. Pref. (II) is pptd. so that (III) are coated. The soln. is prepd. at over 200 deg.F and cooled below 40 deg.F in stage (b) to reduce the amt. of dissolved (III), i.e. from ca. 34.6% to ca. 21.0% in the (II)-(III) mixt. The solvent is based on water and is sepd. by passing the soln. through a liq. solid separator after cooling. The (II) crystals are prepd. wet and kept wet until (III) are added. Pref. (II) is NaN3 and (III) is Fe oxide (Fe203). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is useful for inflating a passenger restraint system e.g. air cushion for vehicles. The cost of (II) can be minimised by integrating prodn. of (II) and (I).
