titleOfInvention METHOD FOR ELECTROPLATING HIGH-HIGH STRENGTH PLASTICS
abstract Substrate of polycarbonate contg. under 50 wt.% acrylonitrile- butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS) is electroplated by (A) (a1) conditioning surface of substrate with agent (I) contg. 5-25 vol.% halogenated hydrocarbon in aq. medium in temp. and for time such that amt. of exposed ABS at conditioned surface is increased; (a2) etching conditioned surface with acid at temp. and for time such that conditioned surface is roughened; (a3) applying non-galvanically a layer of metal on roughened conditioned surface; (a4) electrochemically plating metal onto metal layer applied in (3); or (B) (b1) conditioning surface of substrate with (I) consisting of 5-25 vol.% halogenated cpd. (II), which is an alcohol, ketone, or ether, in aq. medium at temp. and for time such that amt. of exposed (I) at conditioned surface is increased; (b2) - (b4) as (a2) - (a4); or (C) (c1) as (b1); (c2) etching conditioned surface with chromic acid-H2SO4 soln. at temp. and for time such that conditioned surface is roughened; (c3), (c4) as (a3), (a4). Electroplated, impact-resistant articles of polycarbonate modified with ABS, are prepd. by processes (A)-(C). USE/ADVANTAGE - Motor car components, partic. bumpers, mouldings for chassis sides, cladding of underchassis, wheel covers, grills, also other, non-motor car applications for decorative effect where impact resistance is required. Good adhesion between metal plating and substrate is obtd.. (Dwg.0/0)
